eMission Customer Workshop
Only two weeks prior to COP15 Airpas Aviation invited its eMisson customers to exchange first hands-on experiences after submitting their monitoring plans to the assigned authorities. Representatives of Latvian airBaltic, German airBerlin, Condor, Germania, Hamburg International, and the international TUI Airlines as well as Turkish SunExpress gathered to learn from aviation related experts the latest on EU-ETS.
Future aviation verifier Guido Harling, Managing Director of Tasc4Aviation, gave a detailed overview of the verifiers’ assignments and upcoming responsibilities. Not only will the verifiers audit the airline’s systems and processes monitoring proper reporting but also verify and accredit the per annum data. The latter requires not only a close evaluation of the airline’s internal data but the verifier will make use of external data as well, such as airport charges, fuel purchases and booking data. Harling concluded that final and consistent requirements by the assigned authorities are still pending, just like a list of accredited verifiers.
Eagerly awaited was the lecture of Ingo Ramming, Executive Director – Carbon Trade & Finance SICAR SA, Co-Head of Commodity Solutions of Commerzbank AG. Ramming shared his experiences of existing emission trading outside the aviation industry pointing out the differences of EUs, CRMs and ERUs. He recommended to the audience a timely preparation of trading and, moreover, to practice and evaluate the trading of EUAs and CRMs in small quantities and steps in order to gain sufficient experience prior to kick-off date.
Senior Consultant Sonja Waltering of Prologis AG, who has assisted numerous national and international carriers to complete and submit their monitoring plans, summarized the common areas of pain and rework. Airlines will need to focus on the first year of monitoring as the implementation of the submitted plans will most likely require the adaption of processes. Furthermore, Waltering stresses the necessity for airlines to test the pooling of data to ensure a quick set up of their reports. The generated data enables airlines to decide on their strategic directions in terms of optimizing the utilization of aircrafts, reducing the quantity of CO2, or adjusting the route networks.
André Beise, Project Coordinator Fuel & ETS Flight Operations of TUIfly/TUI Airlines shared his experience and effort to create the monitoring plan for the airlines of the TUI group. After collecting the data internally it was loaded into eMission and already the very first test runs confirmed that eMission can easily be used as an integrated solution for the entire topic of MRV. “We gained positive experience with eMission’s efficiency reporting“, Beise reported, „because by using this information, the airline’s strategy for reduction of emission can be reviewed and optimized.”
Daniel Müller, Senior Consultant of Airpas Aviation, presented the latest features of eMission to the audience. eMission is a flexible solution which fully meets the requirements of EU-ETS imposed on airlines. The tool covers a wide range of capabilities such as individual reports on flight sector level, interfaces to common spreadsheet applications, and allowance management.
The workshop concluded with a lively Q&A session allowing the audience to discuss personal experiences in regard to EU-ETS and to place questions regarding Monitoring plans, verification, allowance trading and the beneficial usage of eMission.
