Competitive advantages within aviation emissions trading
“Increasing Aviation’s ETS Efficiency” workshop conducted by Airpas Aviation AG and TÜV NORD Competence Center Aviation
Berlin: Two years before the start of trading EU emission allowances and a few weeks before the drafting of initial emission reports, Airpas Aviation AG and TÜV NORD Competence Center Aviation held a workshop on the subject of emissions trading in the airline sector. The workshop, which took place at the representative office of TÜV NORD in Berlin, was on the theme of "Identifying and Benefiting from competitive advantages in emissions trading". More than forty representatives of national and international airlines took advantage of this excellent opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences.
Besides the planning which is required in the first stages of emissions trading, strategic considerations are also playing an ever more important role. Airlines with a highly-efficient monitoring system for their CO2 emissions, combined with future-orientated internal CO2 management, are today already defining the competitive advantages of tomorrow.
Georg Naumann, Project Manager for EU ETS at the TÜV NORD Competence Center Aviation: "Aircraft operators who are able to recognise the strategic aspects of emissions trading today can increase their profit margins tomorrow, or can offer lower-cost tickets than their competitors. With our workshop, we were able to support the process of preparation which is currently underway in our sector - and we have also put a spotlight on some new aspects. Alongside efficient monitoring of emissions and identification of suitable strategies for reducing the risks associated with prices on the emissions trading market, these included new approaches to reducing fuel consumption and also potential 'green' marketing strategies."
A further aspect is that of software systems which make it easier to record and monitor emissions and tonne-kilometres. As Gerd Schnitzer, Senior Consultant of Airpas Aviation says: "With our verified software, we are always absolutely abreast of current legal requirements. This offers users a high level of security when it comes to their investment."
Stephan Kösling, Head of TÜV NORD Aviation: "The joint workshop with Airpas Aviation provided many signposts as to how aircraft operators should now be setting their framework for the future. As a verifier of emission reports in Germany, TÜV NORD is a competent and valued service provider for its clients in the aviation industry."
Among other services, Airpas Aviation advises airlines on all activities concerned with IT-based recording and monitoring of emissions. Reinhold Renger, CEO of Airpas Aviation: "With our eMission software solution, we support airline companies both professionally and efficiently in their duty to comply with legal EU ETS rules and regulations."
